The first trailer for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” was released Thursday, by 20th Century Studios.

The latest installment in the long-running “Planet of the Apes” franchise is set “several generations” in the future after the last film, “War for the Planet of the Apes,” released in 2017.

I’m not a mega fan of this franchise, but I enjoyed “War For the Planet of the Apes.” That movie starred Andy Serkis in motion capture as the CGI ape leader Cesar and Woody Harrelson as a ruthless human colonel.

An excerpt of the plot synopsis for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is below:

“...apes are the dominant species living harmoniously and humans have been reduced to living in the shadows. As a new tyrannical ape leader builds his empire, one young ape undertakes a harrowing journey that will cause him to question all that he has known about the past and to make choices that will define a future for apes and humans alike.” -20th Century Studios

The film stars Owen Teague, Freya Allen, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy.

It is directed by Wes Ball who previously directed “The Maze Runner” and its two sequels. The screenplay is written by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. Friedman most recently worked on the TV series “Foundation” as co-creator. Jaffa and Silver both wrote “Avatar: The Way of Water” and Aison wrote the most recent “Predator” film “Prey.”

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is the fourth film in the most recent reboot series of films in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise. The decades old franchise has had several projects across TV and film since it first debuted as a movie in 1968. The original film was based on the 1963 science fiction novel of the same name by French author Pierre Boulle.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” releases in theaters on May 24, 2024 (Memorial Day weekend).
